Our team created a smart waste bin capable of separating trash from recycling, sense how much of the trash can is currently being used and indicate this to the user with an LED light strip alongside the front of the bin, and notify the user when it is full and needs to be taken out on trash day. I was responsible for designing and fabricating the mechanism that deposits the item in either trash or recycling depending on what our software detected.
We came in first place in the overall competition and took home a Bosch-sponsored $2000 prize.
2019 (below)
We competed in the industry-sponsored section of the competition this year which was sponsored by Amazon, and had to figure out a way to integrate the cloud technology of the Amazon Alexa with the physical environment in a way that has not been seen yet. Our team created an Alexa controlled wall-mounted robotic arm fixture that can deliver necessary bedside materials for hospital patients with movement disabilities using programmed voice controls. I designed and 3D printed an iphone mounting mechanism for the arm so that patients can Facetime family and friends without having to hold their phone up or recieve aid from a bedside nurse.
We came in first place in the cross-discipline category for combining multiple industries and functionality into one product and took home an Amazon-sponsored $1000 prize.
